UNDERGRADUATE THESIS
Climate Change and Subsurface Urban Heat Island Effect in Dhaka City: Unravelling Impact of Water Temperature in Drinking Water Distribution System 2023-2024
Supervisor: Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ali, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, BUET
- Estimated the DWDS temperature for Dhaka by modifying the NREL model using Python to consider its non-sinusoidal air temperature. And the model was trained using the data of Dhanmondi and Mirpur DWDS temperature and air temperature.
- Analyzed seasonal variations in Dhaka's land surface temperature (LST) using Terra MODIS data with ArcGIS from Dec 2022 to Dec 2023, focusing on Mirpur and Dhanmondi.
- Evaluated how the predicted temperature up to 2068 impacts chlorine decay, THM formation, and bacterial activity using Python.
RESEARCH PROJECTS
- Characterization, Distribution and Analysis of Microplastics in Water and Sediment of Sitalakhya River 2022-2023
Principal Investigator: Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Ali, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, BUET
- Collected 500 sediment and 90 water samples from the Sitalakhya River, specifically targeting areas with Commercial, Residential, Industrial, and Agricultural land use to compare microplastic presence based on human activity.
- Used Van Veen Grab Sampler for sampling the sediment and cotton cloth for the water.
- Characterized 28% of the samples using microscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).
- Analyzed the microplastic size distribution across different sampling locations using the Kruskal-Wallis test in SPSS to determine size variations based on the specified land-use categories.
- Publication Under Review of Scientific Reports.
- Prospect of biopolymer application for sustainable and durable earthen structures in context of Bangladesh: A brief review. 2020-2021
Principal Investigator: Tahsina Alam, Graduate Student, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)
- Explored the use of readily available biopolymers to improve the characteristics of earthen buildings.
- Analyzed findings from almost 41 publications (mainly outside Bangladesh) on the impact of biopolymers on durability, strength, thermal resistance, moisture control, and stability of earthen structures.
- Identified a sustainable and climate-resilient building option for impoverished rural populations in Bangladesh.
- A Comprehensive Review on Surface Water Pollution from Inland Waterways Transportation
2023-2024
Principle Investigator: Dr. Sk. Mokhlesur Rahman, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, BUET
- Reviewed 6-8 studies on the pollution of inland waterways in Bangladesh.
- Examined the impact of transport activities on surface water quality and the trade-off between economic benefits and environmental impact.
HONORS AND AWARDS
- Achieved "Dean's List" in Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year of class that is awarded to students achieving yearly average GPA of 3.75 or more.
- Awarded the "University Merit Scholarship" for ranking among the top 3% of 195 students from 4th to 8th Semester.
- Attained distinguished "Technical Scholarships" at each year of class during undergrad.
Project Experience
Leader, Design Team. the Eco-Friendly Teacher-Student Center at BUET (Capstone Project)
